She's The Business: Meet Bria of KillaCakes
"THIS WORLD IS FULL OF CREATIVE ENTREPRENEURS, BOSS LADIES, AND MOMPRENURS WHO'VE MADE THE DECISION TO DO WHAT THEY LOVE. THIS SERIES IS ALL ABOUT SHEDDING A LIGHT ON THEM AND BRINGING SOME INSPIRATION TO GIRLBOSSES EVERYWHERE." - TL HAYDEN
What do you do?
My name is Bria Taylor, I'm almost 24 and I own Killa Cakes!
How did you get into it?
I got into cakes as an exploration of an art medium that didn't involve a computer. I graduated with a bachelor of fine arts concentrated in graphic design and felt that I wasn't doing enough hands on artwork. With my love for food and baking I decided to work with cake because it's the perfect canvas for flavor and decoration.
How do you stay creative?
How do I stay creative? Well I like to keep people on their toes and surprise them in places they didn't expect. I love pulling inspiration from everywhere including fashion, photography, modern art, and not just within the cake world.
Was there ever a time you wanted to quit?
I have never been a quitter, but I can't truthfully say there haven't been times where I've been really hard on myself. For me I've always been a perfectionist, a procrastinator, and an over achiever. It is by far the worst combination for a person lmao. But sometimes I have to remind myself that craft takes time and practice and dedication. You can't compare yourself to the people with thousands of followers on Instagram because they started with zero at one point too.
What advice would you give another young woman wanting to start her own business?
I would say to any women, girl, no matter how old, to just go for it. Life is short, and unfortunately I had to learn through battling leukemia, that life is something we take for granted. Every second is not guaranteed, so take life by the maltballs and own it!
How do you stay organized to keep your business flowing?
You know, I really genuinely need to work on the organization part. But I've been starting to keep a notepad on me to jot down any ideas or thoughts I have. I'm just always in my head constantly thinking about what I'm doing next and how I can stand out as a business and business owner.
Whats your favorite app to use for your business?
My favorite app to use for my business is UNUM. It allows me to add new photos to my Instagram feed, without posting them, so I can make sure that my images play well with each other.
Whats your favorite word, quote, or verse, for this year and why?
My favorite word is patience. These things take time and love and attention. Remember it and love it!
